Nanothin SiO2-coated nanosilver

Figure_3k

Silver nanoparticles (nanosilver) have superior optical (e.g. plasmonic) properties that make them attractive for biomedical applications. One hurdle up to now has been their toxicity. Researchers from ETH Zurich, however, have now found a solution by flame aerosol synthesis and subsequent in-situ coating nanosilver with nanothin silica films. Link to Press article in ETH Life

In 1998 the Particle Technology Laboratory (PTL) was founded in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering at ETH Zurich. The 10 years of PTL were celebrated on July 4 - 8, 2008 with a Symposium on "Particle Formation" in Vitznau, Lucern with 80 participants including current students, alumni and guest professors from USA, Japan, Korea, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Greece, Malaysia,Denmark, India, Italy, Netherlands, Israel, Russia, Poland, Jordan, Syria, Cyprus, Austria, Finland and Switzerland. They discussed the state of the art in particle formation for manufacturing of materials in formal presentations at the hotel in the mornings followed by afternoon adhoc sessions during boat rides or hikes in the nearby lakes or mountains. The symposium was concluded by laboratory visits at IBM and ETH Zurich.

In the navigation bar on the left, you can find all presentations held during the symposium as a PDF and the pictures that were made during the excursions.

On the link below you can find the programm of the Symposium:
